By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters.

100 Years of Wall Street by Charles R. Geisst,
100 Years of Wall Street by Charles R. Geisst,
Relive 100 years of sensational events and unforgettablecharacters from the world's most famous street! For the first two decades of the 20th century, Wall Street was unsafe for the individual investor; today, millions of ordinary Americans feel secure placing their nest eggs and retirement accounts in a soaring market. How did the shark-infested waters of the world's most famous, if not notorious, street become the trusted center of global finance? How has "The Street" developed under the mixed stewardship of entrepreneurial wizards, swindlers, visionaries and government regulators? 100 Years of Wall Street, a richly illustrated popular history of the American century's greed and ingenuity, catastrophes and triumphs, is also the very human story of rich and powerful men whose actions changed the shape of the economic landscape, often overnight. J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Michael Milken -- each in his own way had enormous influence over the way other people would live their lives. Best-selling author Charles R. Geisst's dramatic narrative singles out the important historical events while interweaving profiles of forceful personalities, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and curious facts to produce a kaleidoscopic view of "The Street." In addition to the 150 photographs, most of them rarely reproduced, there are charts to explain historical convulsions in the markets and reproductions of such memorabilia as early mutual fund literature and stock certificates from mining and railroad companies. An introduction to Wall Street lore that reveals many aspects of history that will be unfamiliar even to knowledgeable investors and investment professionals, 100 Years of Wall Street is very much thestory of America itself. From Teddy Roosevelt's trust-busting to the booming Reagan years to the electric economy of the present, the fortunes of Wall Street have reflected or directed many of the aspirations, achievements and miscalculations of the nation as a whole.

Slurry wall - A slurry wall is a type of wall used to build tunnels, open cuts and foundations in areas of soft earth close to open water or with a high ground water table.

Trombe wall - A Trombe wall is a sun-facing wall built from material that can act as a thermal mass (such as stone, concrete, adobe or water tanks), combined with an air space, insulated glazing and vents to form a large solar thermal collector. Edward Morse patented the design in 1881 (US Patent 246626), but it was ignored until 1964, when it was popularized by the engineer Felix Trombe and architect Jacques Michel.

Waterbed theory - Waterbed theory is the observation, ascribed to Larry Wall, that some systems, such as human and computer languages, contain a minimum amount of complexity, and that attempting to "push down" the complexity of such a system in one place will invariably cause complexity to "pop up" elsewhere. This behavior is likened to a waterbed mattress which contains a certain amount of water; it is possible to push down the mattress in one place, but the displaced water will always cause the mattress to rise elsewhere, because water does not compress.

Air gap - An air gap, as it relates to the plumbing trade, is the unobstructed vertical space between the water outlet and the flood level of a fixture. A simple explanation is a wall mounted faucet and the space above a sink rim (the air gap thus formed) where water would spill out onto the floor.
